The Ebonyi State police command yesterday paraded a 22-year-old rape suspect, Miracle Onwe, who hails from Ezzamgbo in Ohaukwu area of the state for raping a 20 year old girl.
Parading the suspect before newsmen in Abakaliki, the state commissioner of police, Aliyu Garba, said he was arrested through efforts of the Ekumaenyi police division, Akeaba led by the divisional police officer, Waheed Mustapha.
The commissioner who was represented by the command’s spokesman, SP Chris Anyanwu, said the suspect had earlier been arrested for attempting to defile a minor but following pleas from the victim’s parents, he was set free.
He noted that the recent incident came a few months after he was set free, adding that he trailed the 20 year old victim to a rice farm where he committed the act.
“Immediately after the act, the suspect robbed her of her Infinix Smart 5 phone valued at N45,000 and took to his heels.
“When the girl raised the alarm and drew the attention of passers-by who went after him, the suspect dived into a river with the phone. On getting the information, SP Mustapha Waheed, the DPO C Division Ekumenyi swung into action with his detectives.
“The area was cordoned, and the suspect was arrested. He confessed to the crime. Both victim and suspect were taken to FETHA for post-exposure prophylaxis and laboratory tests, respectively. A medical report duly issued by FETHA confirmed that the girl was actually raped.
“The suspect will be arraigned for rape and robbery at the appropriate court in Abakaliki,” he said. In an interview, the suspect who confessed committing the act expressed regret over his actions.
