Oyo State Police Command has recovered the remains of the five slain National Park Service forest guards killed during a bandit attack in Oloka village, Orire local government area of the state.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, said the bodies were recovered on Wednesday as the Commissioner of Police, Femi Haruna, led heads of sister security agencies and the Commandant of the National Forest Rangers on an on-the-spot assessment of the scene.
According to him, immediately upon receiving information about the attack, the CP deployed all available operatives and operational assets to the area, thereby preventing further attack by the assailants and averting a potential breakdown of law and order.
He disclosed that tactical teams, including Mobile Police Force officers, intelligence operatives and EOD units, were deployed, while the site was forensically swept to gather evidence.
“Preliminary reports indicate that the attackers, numbering about 12, emerged from adjoining bushes, opened sporadic gunfire on the Rangers’ Office, and fled the scene,” he added.
He said that investigation had commenced and was already yielding promising leads.
The police command reiterated its commitment to the protection of lives and property and urged members of the public to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information to aid ongoing investigations.
Meanwhile, Governor Seyi Makinde has described the incident as a devastating loss, urging residents, especially in Orire LGA and other border areas, to remain calm.
