The Kaduna State Police Command has rescued no fewer than 75 passengers abducted by suspected bandits and held in a cave on a mountain near Folwaya Village in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of the state.

The victims, comprising men, women and children travelling in commercial vehicles, were rescued after police received timely information from the Birnin Gwari branch of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).

The Command’s spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday, saying the incident occurred at about 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at Folwaya Village, near Birnin Gwari.

According to the statement, the victims were travelling in commercial buses when they were intercepted by armed men who reportedly took them into the forest and hid them in a cave located in a mountainous area.

“The Kaduna State Police Command received credible information from the NURTW, Birnin Gwari Branch, that some Fulani men, women, and children travelling in commercial buses were abducted by unknown armed men wielding AK-47 rifles and other sophisticated weapons at Folwaya Village, near Birnin Gwari,” the statement said.

It added that upon receiving the information, a team from the Birnin Gwari Area Command was immediately deployed to the location.

The police said the arrival of the operatives forced the abductors to flee, leaving their captives behind.

“On sighting the well-armed police operatives, the abductors fled, abandoning their captives, who were successfully rescued unharmed,” Hassan said.

The state Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Muhammad, commended the Birnin Gwari NURTW branch for providing what he described as “timely and vital information” that enabled the police to respond swiftly.

Muhammad also praised the Area Commander, Birnin Gwari, and his personnel for their “swift and professional response” to the distress call.
