The Lagos State Police Command has commenced investigation into alleged extortion of a million naira by four police officers from three corps members in the Surulere area of the state.
According to a viral video by an X (formerly Twitter) user @YemieFash, the officers were seen in a ‘stop and search’ where they demanded for over one million naira from the corps members.
The post on X, stated, “Your officers today in Surulere extorted 1 million naira from 3 corps members.
They were threatened with firearms, kidnapped, and taken to the Kafaru Oluwole Tinubu House Area C Police Command of the @LagosPoliceNG where they were robbed.
“Their offence was the absence of a physical copy of a driver’s license. This is evil!” the post said.
The user accused an officer in mufti as the one who collected the money.
Meanwhile, a transaction receipt of the debited account was also attached to the post with one of the victims explaining how they were extorted by the police officers.
The Lagos State Police Command Spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, a superintendent of Police disclosed on his verified X handle that the police officers had been identified and summoned on Friday.
He stated, “The men have been summoned and their trial has commenced. We urge the complainants to visit the Complaint Response Unit at the State Headquarters to testify at the ongoing trial.”
Recall earlier in the year, that an X user accused the men of the Nigeria Police stationed at the Ketu Bridge in Lagos of extorting him of the sum of N95,000.
The incident was said to have happened on Ketu Road linking the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Tuesday afternoon.
Also in June, 2024, a police Inspector was demoted to a Sergeant for trying to extort money from a drone operator.
