The Police Command in Osun has called for calm following a Federal High Court judgment in Osogbo dismissing the tenure elongation suit filed by All Progressives Congress (APC) local government chairmen and councilors in the state.
This is contained in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, on Friday in Osogbo.
Ojelabi said the command was aware of the tension generated by the judgment and urged all parties to adhere to established legal procedures in enforcing court judgments.
“The attention of the command has been drawn to the rising tension following the recent judgment delivered by the Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo over the local government dispute.
“We are closely monitoring the conduct, statements and actions of all parties involved. It is pertinent to note that there are laid-down legal procedures for the execution of court judgments, with due consideration for the right of appeal.
“The rule of law remains the foundation of our democratic society; therefore, all parties are enjoined to strictly comply with established legal procedures when seeking to enforce judgments,” he said.
The police spokesperson warned that the command would not tolerate lawlessness or extrajudicial actions capable of jeopardising the existing peace in the state.
He urged political actors, their supporters and the general public to remain calm, law-abiding and peaceful.
Ojelabi added that all grievances and enforcement actions should be channelled through appropriate legal and judicial mechanisms.
He said the command had been placed on heightened alert to ensure law and order across the state.
“The command will not hesitate to take decisive action against any individual or group that attempts to disrupt the peace or violate the law,” he said.
