Poor Execution, Engineering Talent Shortage Stall Fintech Ideas, Association Warns

The FinTech Association of Nigeria (FintechNGR) has identified weak execution capacity and a growing shortage of engineering talent as the biggest reasons many promising financial technology ideas never make it to market, warning that innovation alone is no longer enough to build successful fintech businesses.
In a new industry insight titled “The Real Reason Most Fintech Ideas Never Launch (It’s Not the Idea),” the association argued that while fintech firms are generating innovative concepts at an unprecedented pace, the industry’s greatest challenge lies in converting those ideas into products that customers can use.
According to the association, “Walk into almost any fintech’s product meeting, and you’ll find no shortage of good ideas. The ideas are rarely the problem. What kills them is what happens next, the long, quiet journey from ‘great idea’ to shipped product.”
It added that “Financial-services innovation is accelerating faster than ever. What isn’t keeping pace is delivery. And the single biggest reason for that gap has a name: engineering capacity.”
The association stressed that the challenge is not unique to Nigeria but reflects a broader global shortage of software engineering talent.
Citing research by International Data Corporation (IDC), FintechNGR noted that the global software developer shortage is projected to reach about four million professionals by 2026, as financial institutions compete with other sectors undergoing digital transformation for the same pool of skilled engineers.
According to the association, this talent gap means many startups struggle to build, test and scale products quickly enough to meet changing customer expectations.
It noted that founders often spend months perfecting ideas instead of validating them with users, only to discover that the products fail to address genuine market needs.
The association advised entrepreneurs to prioritise rapid experimentation through minimum viable products (MVPs), gather customer feedback early and continuously refine their offerings rather than waiting to launch “perfect” solutions.
It further argued that successful execution requires much more than technical expertise, including strong product management, regulatory compliance, strategic partnerships and the ability to adapt as market conditions evolve.
The warning comes as Nigeria continues to strengthen its position as Africa’s largest fintech ecosystem. FintechNGR said fintech firms accounted for about 63 per cent of the total funding raised by Nigerian startups in 2021, reflecting the sector’s dominance in the country’s technology landscape.
The association, established in 2017, now serves as the umbrella body representing hundreds of fintech companies and works with regulators, including the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), to promote innovation and improve the operating environment.
The stakeholders say the Nigerian fintech sector has experienced rapid expansion over the past decade, driven by growing smartphone adoption, increased demand for digital payments and financial inclusion initiatives. Nigeria accounts for about 28 per cent of Africa’s fintech companies, making it the continent’s largest fintech market by number of startups.
However, experts opined that despite the impressive growth, many startups continue to struggle with funding constraints, regulatory compliance costs, cybersecurity risks and the challenge of achieving product-market fit.
For founders seeking long-term success, FintechNGR maintained that the future belongs not to those with the most ambitious ideas but to those capable of executing them efficiently, solving real customer problems and bringing products to market quickly.
Meanwhile, as competition intensifies across Africa’s digital finance industry, stakeholders believe that strengthening engineering capacity, improving product development processes and investing in technical talent will be critical to sustaining Nigeria’s leadership in fintech innovation.
