As part of measures towards fostering peaceful coexistence and social cohesion among residents and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) returnees, the Yobe State ministry of religious affairs in collaboration with the Multi-Sectoral Recovery Crisis Recovery Project (MCRP) has organised a three day sensitisation forum for youths and religious leaders in the state.

The training tagged ‘Directing the energy, idealism and innovations of youths towards a peaceful and elaterin society’ was meant to redirect the minds of participants towards peace and progress.

The special guest of honour and former commissioner for finance in the state, Muhammd Samaila Nguru, while declaring the training open, said peaceful coexistence among the diverse communities remained the key and ladder for the actualisation of any development initiative.

“The training is not only important but also apt considering the position of our teaming youth in the society.  Youth are the drivers of peace and social cohesion if they are properly guided and trained,” he said.

The facilitator, Professor Muhammad Sani Isa Abdul Mumin of the University of Maiduguri who presented a paper on “The role of homes in child upbringing and inculcating societal values”, described the family as the proper breeding ground of every child.

He attributed the unsound attitudes of youths, especially on drug abuse, theft and robbery to loose of parental care.

“Our families have failed individually and collectively. If you see what is happening to our youths today, you will first blame parents before blaming the larger society.  It is during the early age that a child’s character becomes molded,” he said.
