Manchester City opened up a three-point lead at the top of the Premier League after surviving a remarkable eight-goal thriller to beat Sunderland 5-3 at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The result moved City clear at the summit following Arsenal’s 3-0 defeat to Brighton on Saturday, while Pep Guardiola’s side maintained their perfect start to the league campaign.

City took the lead after just nine minutes through Enzo Fernández, but Sunderland quickly hit back to level the contest through Brian Brobbey.

The visitors’ response did little to settle an increasingly open contest, with both sides repeatedly threatening in attack.

Rayan Cherki restored City’s advantage in the 29th minute after being set up by Antoine Semenyo, only for Brobbey to strike again four minutes later to make it 2-2.

City regained the lead just before half-time when Semenyo found the net in the 43rd minute, sending the hosts into the interval 3-2 ahead.

Semenyo completed his brace 12 minutes after the restart to extend City’s advantage to 4-2 and put Guardiola’s side in control.

Sunderland refused to surrender, though, with Brobbey completing his hat-trick in the 59th minute to reduce the deficit to 4-3.

The Black Cats continued to threaten an equaliser, but City finally settled the contest in the 81st minute when Erling Haaland struck to make it 5-3.

The victory lifted City to 15 points from their opening five Premier League matches, giving them a three-point advantage over Arsenal.

The champions had been level with City on points before the weekend, but their heavy defeat at Brighton opened the door for Guardiola’s side to establish an early advantage.

For Sunderland, the defeat came despite an impressive attacking display, with Brobbey’s hat-trick ensuring they remained in the contest until the final stages.

City, however, held on to claim another victory and strengthen their position at the top of the table.
