A Lagos-based educationist and computer expert, Livinus Okwara, has urged the federal government to make contingency plans for immigrants who would be expelled from America.
According to him, this should be done before the swearing-in of United States president-elect Donald Trump on January 20 who has vowed to tighten visa policy for immigrants, particularly those from Africa and Central America, among other countries.
Speaking in Lagos, Chief Livinus Okwara, also a holder of the Nna Ndigbo title, said the move had far-reaching implications for Nigerians and other nationals who would be affected. He urged the federal government to think outside the box and embark on pragmatic moves to address the situation.
He suggested the enunciation of dual citizenship to African Americans who would be affected but are willing to come with their skills and invest in the country. Okwara also said other African countries should collaborate with Nigeria to prevent the policy from having negative effects on the continent.
He said dual citizenship means the immigrants would have the unique opportunity to own American and Nigerian passports, with accompanying benefits. He said, “The policy would enable the immigrants to live and work freely and have the advantage of investing in the economies of African countries, as well as take up employment opportunities in all sectors of the economy if they so desire.”
