The Nigerian Presidency has debunked a viral screenshot purporting to show a tweet from United States President Donald Trump criticising President Bola Tinubu over the recent bombings in Maiduguri, describing it as fake.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, described the circulating post as false, labelling it “Fake!!!” in a post on X on Tuesday.

Dare also shared the doctored screenshot to counter the claim and caution the public against misinformation.

The alleged tweet, which has gained traction on social media, accused Tinubu of mishandling insecurity, particularly in the North-East, and criticised his recent trip to the United Kingdom amid deadly attacks in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The fabricated post further suggested that Trump called on UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to ask Tinubu to return to Nigeria immediately.

However, independent checks show that no such statement was made on any verified accounts linked to Trump, including his official handles or any affiliated platforms.

The rebuttal comes amid heightened tensions following recent attacks in Maiduguri.

On Monday evening, multiple explosions carried out by suspected suicide bombers struck different parts of the city, including crowded civilian areas.

Police authorities confirmed that at least 23 people were killed and more than 100 others injured in the coordinated blasts. The incidents followed an earlier attack on a military formation in the Ajilari area.

Reacting to the development, President Tinubu described the attacks as “profoundly upsetting” and the actions of desperate террорист groups under pressure from Nigerian forces.

He expressed condolences to victims’ families, sympathised with those injured, and assured residents that the government remains committed to restoring security.

The president also directed security and intelligence chiefs to relocate to Maiduguri to take charge of operations, reiterating that Nigeria will not succumb to fear.
