The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has cautioned against any form of foreign interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs, emphasizing the need to safeguard the country’s democracy and sovereignty.

In a statement signed by the party’s Director of Media and Public Affairs, Dr. Christopher Okechukwu, the ADC expressed concern over reports linking Nigeria’s designation as a “Country of Particular Concern” by former U.S. President Donald Trump, describing it as an issue that requires careful national reflection.

The party called on Nigerians to uphold democratic values, unity, and national stability above partisan or personal interests.

According to the statement, the ADC leadership is worried about the potential implications of such international designations for Nigeria’s sovereignty and external relations.

It urged all political stakeholders and coalition partners to prioritize national interest in their engagements with foreign actors.

“The ADC believes that while there may be policy differences with the current administration on issues such as security and the economy, such disagreements should not invite external interference or actions that could weaken the country’s democratic institutions,” Okechukwu stated.

He added that the party’s position underscores the need for Nigerians to take collective responsibility in protecting democratic governance and ensuring the nation’s independence in global affairs.

The ADC also called for a broader national dialogue on the role of foreign powers in Nigeria’s political and economic environment, noting that such discussions are vital for sustaining democratic stability.

“As we navigate complex political challenges, our commitment to protecting Nigeria’s democracy and sovereignty remains unwavering. The party reiterates the importance of principled leadership and unity in building a stronger and more secure future for all Nigerians,” the statement read.
