Professionals Seek Tinubu’s Intervention In Rivers Crisis

The Niger Delta Professionals for Peace and Democracy (NDPPD), a non-partisan platform committed to democratic governance, peace, and sustainable development, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State to restore peace and stability.

The group expressed grave concern over the lingering political standoff between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Rivers State House of Assembly, noting that the protracted conflict poses serious threats to democratic institutions, governance, and socio-economic development in the state.

In a statement signed by its President, Marcus Uduak, the NDPPD warned that allowing the crisis to continue unchecked could create fertile ground for opposition political forces to exploit the situation for electoral gains ahead of the 2027 general elections, thereby deepening divisions and undermining the collective interest of Rivers people.

“Rivers State is too critical to the political and economic stability of the Niger Delta and Nigeria at large to be left in a state of sustained political uncertainty,” the statement read. “Mr President must act decisively to prevent further escalation and safeguard democratic governance.”

The group further noted that the recent court order restraining the Rivers State House of Assembly from proceeding with impeachment actions against the Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, should be viewed as an opportunity for sober reflection, dialogue, and reconciliation among all stakeholders.

According to the NDPPD, this window should be utilised by the Governor, lawmakers, political leaders, and all aggrieved individuals or groups to place the interest of Rivers State above personal, factional, or partisan considerations.

“This is a defining moment for true lovers of democracy and Rivers State. All parties must demonstrate statesmanship, embrace dialogue, and work collectively to restore calm, mutual respect, and effective governance,” the statement emphasised.
