A non-governmental organisation, Sokoto Youth for Progressive Movement (SYPM) has called on the federal government to take decisive action against foreign government interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs by punishing foreign protesters during the just concluded nationwide protests in the country.

The call was made yesterday by the coordinator of the movement, Comrade Mustapha Buda in a statement he issued to journalists.

According to him, in any thriving democracy, the right to peaceful protest is a fundamental pillar, empowering citizens to voice their concerns, advocate for change, and hold their leaders accountable. He said for Nigerians, this right is enshrined in the constitution and reflects our commitment to democratic values and freedoms. He noted that peaceful protest is not merely a right but a vital expression of our collective will and an essential mechanism for societal progress.

He noted that it allows us to address grievances, and foster dialogue within a framework of respect and non-violence, adding that upholding this right is crucial for ensuring that Nigeria remains a vibrant and participatory democracy where the voices of its people can be heard and acted upon without fear of foreign interference.

Buda, however, noted that the coalition of civil society groups in Sokoto, under the aegis of Sokoto Youth for Progressive Movement (SYPM), is deeply concerned about recent developments involving foreign interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs. He observed that during the just concluded national protest; foreign flags were prominently displayed, raising serious concerns about attempts by foreign entities to destabilise our nation as they did in Libya, Sudan and others.

He added that SYPM strongly condemns any form of external interference that undermines Nigeria’s sovereignty and the democratic rights of its citizens.

The SYPM called upon the Federal Government of Nigeria to take decisive action by identifying and prosecuting foreign individuals and organisations found to be involved in these destabilising activities.
