A former vice chancellor of Federal University of Technology (FUT) Minna and Al- Hikmah University, Ilorin, Emeritus Professor Musbau Akanji has linked constant overfeeding to premature death.
He warned that excessive food intake is harmful to the health.
Delivering the maiden edition of pre-Ramadan lecture of the Muslim Women Wing of the Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, the Professor of Biochemistry recommended small but quality food at regular intervals for healthy living.
Akanji who spoke on the topic “Family Nutrition During and After Ramadan” advised fasting people to break their fast with fluid food for the smooth movement of the food and easy metabolism.
He explained that too much and constant feeding gives the body much and serious work to process the food which he said will take place within the period of seven hours, adding that many people do not allow their internal organs responsible for the processing of the food to rest before they consume another food, thereby putting more pressure on the body system.
He, however, enjoined people to abstain from fast food and sugarcoated food and drinks, saying that they do more harm than good to the body system, especially the adult who are within the age bracket of 30 years and above.
He stressed the need for constant consumption of fruits, water and other natural juices.
Akanji, who said the last time he took soft drinks was in 1979, said soft drinks, energy drinks, refined white sugar, and fast food do more harm to the human body than good.
The vice chancellor of KWASU, Prof. Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, said that the institution will look into the possibility of imbibing some of the advice given by the guest lecturer.
The chairman of KWASU Muslim Community, Dr Usman Adam, thanked the women’s wing for the laudable initiative and described the event as a step in the right direction.
The Amirah of the KWASU Muslim Women Wing, Hajia Mariam Aladodo said the event featured the presentation of lecture and donation of money to 10 selected widows who are KWASU staff.
