The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has donated 1,000 cartons of food items to the National Mosque in Abuja as part of efforts to support vulnerable families during the holy month of Ramadan.
Each carton contained essential food supplies including rice, seasoning, salt, cooking oil, tomato paste and other household staples aimed at easing the burden on fasting families.
Presenting the items on behalf of the First Lady on Monday, the chairman of the National Mosque Welfare Committee, Mallam Abubakar Sadiq, expressed appreciation for the gesture.
He said the donation would go a long way in supporting both Muslim and Christian families during the fasting period.
“We are deeply grateful to the First Lady for this kind gesture,” Sadiq said. “I believe more people will be encouraged to do more for society by following her lead.”
The distribution exercise was conducted within the mosque premises shortly after the Zuhr prayers. Beneficiaries, who included both Muslims and Christians, received the food packs in what organisers described as a transparent and orderly process.
One of the recipients, Mrs Aisha Musa, said the items would provide significant relief for her household.
“These gifts will go a long way for me and my family,” she said, thanking the First Lady and the welfare committee for “sharing the items equally and in plain sight.”
Another beneficiary, Judith Andrew, a young student, said she was taking the package home to support her family.
“I’m very grateful for this support. It will really help us,” she said.
Musa Yusuf, also a recipient, expressed appreciation for the initiative, describing it as timely amid rising food prices and economic challenges.
The Ramadan welfare outreach adds to ongoing efforts by public office holders and private individuals to cushion the effects of economic hardship, particularly during religious observances that emphasise charity, compassion and community support.
