In a bid to recover the Bicycle lanes in the Federal Capital Territory, restore the culture of cycling in the country and make transportation easier and affordable as the cost of transportation keeps increasing, the mandate secretary, FCT Transport secretariat, Abuja, Arch Uboku Nya has harped on the commitment of the FCT administration to develop cycling as means of transport in the capital city.

He stated this when the Ochenuell Mobility donated 20 Bicycles and bicycle parking space to Government Secondary School, Tudu Wada, Wuse Zone 4.

Arch Uboku further noted that “as government, we are committed to cycling development as complimentary mode to public transport. Accordingly we shall expedite action to facilitate inclusive policies and regulations as well as facility provisions that will enable safe cycling environment.”

Arch Uboku who was represented by Mr Pascal Nnadozie said, “I will ensure that the Directorate of Road Traffic Services who are in support of this project play their contributory roles to ensure safety”.

While appreciating the commendable effort of Ochenuel Mobility, Arch Uboku urged beneficiary students to ride safely and asked the school management to make good use of the parking facility.

The chief executive officer of Ochenuell Mobility and donor of the facility and bicycles, Engr. John Emmanuel Sani said that on this project, the vision at Ochenuell Mobility is to see 30 per cent of students cycling to school in FCT by 2025 and that this project which had six critical activities enjoyed the support of the Global Designing Initiative USA.

He also told me that the project started in May, 2023 with a national stakeholders forum on safe streets to school, followed by a feasibility study on select school corridors, then a capacity building program for the city authority and security/safety agencies, thereafter, an open streets event held to sensitize the public, drivers and other road users.

Engr. Emmanuel further called for sustenance of the collaboration asking for support to ensure that all residents of the FCT can ride bicycles safely across the city’s roads.

Also, the director and secretary, FCT Secondary Education Board, Dr Mohammed Sani, who spoke to me, said that “the benefits of cycling to our students are enormous which includes personal benefits to the student, benefits to the family, and benefits to government, benefits to society and to the environment.”
