As the 2023 polls begin in a few days, the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), the Throne Room Parish, Maitama, Abuja, Sunday staged a prayer road walk to seek divine intervention towards peaceful, free and fair general elections.

They also called on God to show mercy to Nigeria and Nigerians as they face up to the various challenges confronting the nation, even as he urged Nigerians to vote credible candidates who have the country at heart.

Hundreds of members of the Church wearing T- Shirts bearing the theme of Global Prayer Walk 2023, “Mercy”, marched from Transcorp Hilton, Maitama, Abuja, to the Federal High Court, and back to Transcorp Hilton, where the church holds its weekly services.

The pastor of the parish, Tunde Benjamin-Laniyi, who led the walk said the prayer walk is a global annual event to pray for God’s graces upon the affairs of nations.

The pastor prayed against security challenges across country, and urged Nigerians to examine political candidates for the 2023 general election and vote wisely. He said that it is time to come together, break through the challenges of insecurity and other challenges affecting the country’s development.

He decared that Nigeria’s eagle will fly high again and that the country will live and survive through all the storms.

He said: “We are expecting that the whole church will be involved in election process. We expect Nigerians to turn out en masse to vote and also to release their voice to heaven for God’s blessing to be available to us. We also pray for peaceful polls so that we don’t have people with ulterior motives or contrary intentions to hijack the process.

On the kind of president Nigerians should be voting for, he said the country needs a president that will be nationalistic in outlook and not a promoter of tribal or religious sentiment.

“So God has given us the power to choose; it depend on the choice of the people. At the end of the election, we will see who the people have chosen for themselves.

“We want leader who is responsible, someone who has a burden for the nation. We don’t want someone with sectional bias, we want someone who will be there for all. We are praying for someone who is connected to the country by heart, not just a section of the people or tribal and religion consideration.”

The pastor’s wife, Dayo Benjamin-Laniyi, likened Nigeria to a woman under labour paibs and said after she is delivered of the foetus by next weekend’s presidential poll, joy would return to the land

Another church leader, Pastor Emmanuel Mulero, urged Nigerians to come out to vote for the right candidate ,contending that Nigeria had always chosen the wrong leaders because most good people stayed away from casting their votes on election day.

A church member, Deji Abuila, said this year’s event was particularly organised to pray for mercy of God over the coming polls, that His will is done for Nigeria.
