The member representing Ideato North/South federal constituency of Imo state in the House of Representatives, Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, has commended the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, for his directive to reduce the number of tactical teams across police formations nationwide.
According to Ugochinyere, the move is a timely and strategic step towards strengthening operational efficiency, improving accountability, and restoring public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.
Disu had ordered that tactical teams at zonal and state command levels be limited to a maximum of five, while area commands and divisions are restricted to not more than three teams.
The directive is aimed at enhancing supervision, streamlining deployments, and addressing growing public concerns over the proliferation and alleged excesses of poorly monitored tactical units.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, said the reform followed widespread complaints from citizens regarding the conduct of certain tactical teams and the need for improved oversight.
Reacting to the development, the federal lawmaker, noted that effective policing requires not just manpower, but disciplined coordination and responsible leadership.
He emphasised that reducing the number of tactical units would ensure better supervision, minimize abuses, and promote professionalism within the Force.
The Ugochinyere further urged the police hierarchy to sustain the reform momentum by prioritizing continuous training, intelligence-driven operations, and community policing initiatives that align with global best practices.
He reiterated his support for reforms that enhance security while safeguarding the rights and dignity of Nigerians.
Ugochinyere added that the National Assembly remains committed to legislative actions that will strengthen institutional accountability in the nation’s security architecture.
End.
