Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu on Friday commissioned the reconstructed runway of the Chuba Okadigbo International Airport at Onueke, Ebonyi State.
Mrs Tinubu who landed at the airport at 3:18pm inaugurated the rehabilitated runway before proceeding to the grand finale of the Ebonyi Women’s Day celebration.
The wife of the President was received at the airport by the wife of the Vice President, Hajia Nana Shetima; Ebonyi State governor, Francis Nwifuru; his wife, Uzoamaka Nwifuru and the 23 spouses of state governors.
Senator Tinubu commended Governor Nwifuru for completing the runway, adding that she was impressed with the development going on in the state.
“I want to thank God for the good work you’ve been doing.
“Your wife is a big mobiliser, I have to say all this. I might not have an opportunity to, but it gladdens my heart, because when we see people that are young, they have their hands on their work and they are doing great jobs. They have to be commended,” the first lady said.
She prayed that planes will land and take up safely on the commissioned runway without any accident, further praying that the airport will facilitate businesses to the state.
Earlier, Governor Nwifuru said the runway was earlier constructed with concrete but he later realised that concrete was not accepted for runway construction.
“When we came in, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) closed the airport, that this place was not a place that a plane can land, and we decided to start building the runway again.
“Based on the support and the help of your husband (President Bola Tinubu), by the special grace of God, we did the runway and completed it to be one of the best runways in this country,” Governor Nwifuru said.
