First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has announced plans to distribute 37,000 disposable sanitary pads and provide business recapitalisation grants of N200,000 to 9,259 persons with disabilities (PWDs) under her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI).

Speaking at her first meeting of the year with governors’ wives at the State House in Abuja, Mrs Tinubu outlined a series of initiatives aimed at empowering women, promoting environmental sustainability, and supporting vulnerable communities across the country.

She said the Flow with Confidence programme would provide disposable sanitary pads to girls nationwide, ensuring they do not miss school due to menstruation.

Each state, including the Federal Capital Territory, will receive 10,000 cartons of pads, and governors’ wives will oversee distribution to ensure every girl in a school gets one carton.

The first lady also plans to establish climate change clubs in secondary schools and universities. She said the initiative would engage students in climate awareness and waste management. The long-term goal is to set up a recycling plant in each state to tackle plastic pollution.

As part of its empowerment scheme, the Renewed Hope Initiative will provide N200,000 grants to 250 PWDs in each state to help them recapitalise their businesses.

Mrs Tinubu noted that RHI had already supported women farmers and provided food staples to vulnerable groups, aligning with broader national development goals. She urged governors’ wives to take the lead in implementing these initiatives, stressing the importance of prayer and unity during Lent and Ramadan.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, the first lady highlighted the significance of local production in the Flow with Confidence Initiative.

“Everything, everything, there is a priority. It depends… like the Flow with Confidence Initiative, we still have to manufacture the sanitary towels, and we’re trying to produce locally, which will create jobs and put money in our economy.”

She also emphasised the role of students in environmental projects, saying:

“We want the students from tertiary institutions, especially those in the Faculty of Environment, to be involved, and I believe that we want to see even those in biological sciences as well.”

Encouraging young people to embrace a strong work ethic, Mrs Tinubu added:

“Hard work is one of our tenets that, you know, took us out of poverty. Even the Bible says that faith without works is dead. So, go and work, work for this country. Let this country grow.”

Reflecting on the simultaneous observance of Lent and Ramadan, she called for unity and spiritual reflection.

“God has always tried to put all of us together. There is one God, and there will only be one God forever. This is the time to seek Him.”

She urged Nigerians to pray for peace and prosperity, adding:

“We should remember our dear nation Nigeria in prayers for peace and prosperity as we all build together a nation that will take her place among the comity of nations.”
