Renewed Hope Unity Cup to Unite 774 LGAs in Landmark Grassroots Football Tournament

The National Renewed Hope Unity Cup will bring together football teams from all 774 Local Government Areas of Nigeria in what its organisers describe as the country’s largest and most inclusive grassroots football competition.

National Coordinator and Convener of the tournament, Dr Suleiman Yahaya Kwande, disclosed this on Wednesday during the unveiling of the competition’s logo, saying the initiative was designed to use football as a tool for national unity, youth empowerment, talent discovery, peacebuilding and community development.

Kwande said the tournament would provide young footballers, particularly those from rural and underserved communities, with opportunities to showcase their talents before professional clubs, academies, licensed agents, national team selectors and international scouts.

He added that all participating teams would receive football equipment, including jerseys, boots, balls, training bibs and cones, while players and officials would also benefit from welfare packages, insurance provisions where applicable and match allowances.

According to him, all matches would be professionally produced and streamed on digital platforms to give players national and international visibility and attract scouts, clubs, investors and development partners.

Kwande said a major legacy of the competition would be a nationwide Train-the-Trainer programme, under which selected coaches from each of the 774 LGAs would receive technical education, coaching certification and modern football development training.

The coaches would subsequently return to their communities to train and mentor grassroots coaches, physical education teachers, academy instructors and football volunteers.

He said the initiative would also stimulate local economies through activities in transportation, hospitality, tourism, media, sports marketing, merchandising and event management.

“The National Renewed Hope Unity Cup is more than a football competition—it is a bold national investment in Nigeria’s future,” Kwande said.

He noted that the initiative would complement the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda by investing in youth development, strengthening grassroots institutions and using sports to promote inclusive national development.

The organisers are expected to drive the project through partnerships with government, corporate organisations, development partners, international football bodies, philanthropic organisations and other stakeholders.
