Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar Prof. Florence Obi has charged female students among the university’s 12,800 new students to report cases of sexual harassment against them to the school authorities so that management of the institution can act on any erring lecturer.
She gave the charge at the 48th matriculation ceremony of the institution which took place Thursday in Calabar.
Obi stressed the importance of integrity, discipline and academic excellence, asking the freshers to shun internet fraud (yahoo-yahoo) and other anti-social behaviors, citing cultism, drug abuse, exam malpractice and internet fraud as threats to their growth and the university’s reputation.
The vice chancellor who whose tenure would elapse on December 1, 2025 reminded the students that the institution has rules and regulations that must be followed, stressing that violating school rules could have serious consequences on their academic career.
“As a centre of excellence, knowledge generation and dissemination, the university is governed by rules and regulations that require your discipline, honesty, hard work and appropriate conduct.
“Abide by the university’s laws because violation attracts serious consequences on your studentship. You are therefore advised to have a copy of the Student Handbook for guidance,” she said.
She said the degree they were seeking would only be awarded if they were deemed worthy in character and learning.
