Shehu stressed that ethical journalism is grounded in key principles such as truthfulness, accuracy, fact-based reporting, independence, impartiality, and public accountability. He emphasized that these principles are crucial in an era where misinformation spreads rapidly.

“Ethical journalism is about maintaining credibility. Journalists must adhere to moral principles that ensure the profession remains a trusted source of information,” he stated.

Also, Senator Shehu Sani, honoured as Activist of the Year 2024, expressed gratitude for the recognition and acknowledged the challenges facing the media, especially in an era dominated by social media and misinformation.

Sani emphasised that journalists play a crucial role in combating insecurity, particularly in Northern Nigeria, and ensuring that Nigerians’ rights are defended.

“You have a duty to report what is accurate, right, and objective. In today’s world, where impressions often outweigh facts, the media must rise above sensationalism and focus on truth and accountability,” he stated.

Speaking on behalf of the chairman of the organizing committee, Halima Abubakar acknowledged the significance of the occasion, stating: “Seven years of reporting in Nigeria is no small feat. The journey has been challenging, but with the right team and a bit of luck, we have made it to this stage. Tonight, we recognize and appreciate all the important personalities gathered here who have made time out of their busy schedules to grace this event.”

She further emphasized The Reporters Nigeria’s mission to change the narrative in Nigerian journalism, highlighting their commitment to truthful and impactful reporting.

As part of the celebration, The Reporters Nigeria Magazine reaffirmed its commitment to ethical journalism and honoured media professionals who have demonstrated excellence and integrity in the field. The event concluded with the unveiling of the magazine’s new logo, symbolizing its dedication to truth, accountability, and professionalism in journalism.

The editor-in-chief, Reporters Nigeria, Abdullahi Sabiu, said that, “Our new logo embodies The Reporters Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to Service to Humanity Through Journalism, symbolizing our dedication to delivering impactful news across diverse sectors, from breaking stories to business, security, and beyond. I extend my deepest gratitude to all our esteemed awardees and distinguished guests who graced the occasion, making it a truly memorable and well-attended event. Special appreciation goes to the Executive Governors of Katsina and Jigawa States, who, despite their demanding schedules, ensured their presence was felt through their esteemed representatives, in persons of the Katsina State commissioner of Internal Security and Jigawa State SUBEB chairman. Their recognition as Governor of the Year (Security) and Governor of the Year (Education), respectively, underscores their commitment to progress in these critical sectors.

“Our heartfelt thanks also go to NNPC Limited and its outstanding team, whose presence reaffirmed the company’s trailblazing role in the energy sector. We deeply appreciate the Minister, the EFCC Chairman’s representative, and the Chief of Defence Staff’s representative, who honored our invitation and added immense value to the evening. To the serving and former Senators, activists, philanthropists, and corporate leaders, your presence and unwavering dedication to societal growth continue to inspire many. A special mention goes to the incredible organizing committee, the true driving force behind the event’s success. Your hard work, dedication, and meticulous planning ensured that everything ran seamlessly, making this anniversary celebration a night to remember. Thank you for making history with us, and we look forward to many more impactful years ahead!”
