The House of Representatives has set out to investigate the alleged irregularities in the administration of copyright matters in the country.

The House Committee on Justice which is saddled with the investigation will be engaging with relevant stakeholders as its report is expected within four weeks.

The Green Chamber took the decision when it adopted a motion sponsored by the lawmaker representing Ohaozara, Onicha, and Ivo federal constituency of Ebonyi state, Hon Nkemkanma Kama.

Karma in his motion, noted that there was public outcry by the Copyright Society of Nigeria Ltd/GTE (COSON), various musicians, authors, composers, performers and copyright owners.

The lawmaker urged the federal government to dismantle the scheme foisted on the Nigerian music industry to allegedly siphon money from innocent Nigerian copyright owners.

He said the outcry raised serious concerns on the administration and regulation of copyright matters in the country, including allegations of actions and decisions which may have adversely affected the interests of Nigerian musicians, authors, composers, performers and other copyright owners.

Karma expressed concern that: “the allegations raised, if established, may have significant implications for the protection of intellectual property rights, the creative industry and the livelihoods of Nigerian artists and rights holders.”

He emphasised the importance of providing all parties concerned with a fair opportunity to present

their positions and relevant evidence in accordance with the principles of natural justice.

Karma stressed that: “the House of Representatives has a constitutional responsibility to ensure transparency,

accountability and adherence to due process in the administration of public affairs and institutions established by law as enshrined in Section 88 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of

Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).”

Consequently, the House mandated the Committee on Justice to investigate the alleged irregularities and report back to it for further legislative action(s).
