The House also asked the security agencies to immediately commence the use of the registered National Identification Numbers (NIN) to trace and curb insecurity across the country.

It urged the FCT minister, Nyesom Wike to install security cameras and other security gadgets around the FCT and equip security personnel with modern security equipment to combat the rising and frightening insecurity within the territory and its environs, including the use of drones.

The resolutions were sequel to the adoption of an urgent public importance sponsored by Hon. Dominic Okafor (APGA, Anambra) at plenary, yesterday.

Moving the motion, Okafor noted that FCT remains the seat of the federal government from where national policies are formulated, headquarters of federal government agencies are domiciled, international edifices are located, the majority of foreigners and visitors are residents.

He said the Nasarawa State government has announced plans to install security cameras across their state to curb the distressing security challenges in the state which ought to be replicated in Abuja being the centre of the nation and should be the safest place in the country.

The lawmaker lamented the level of insecurity raving the nation’s capital recently, saying it was very disappointing and unbefitting of a Federal Capital City where there are escalating cases of “one chance”,  armed robberies, banditry and rampant kidnappings and killings.

On the other hand, the House faulted the National Examination Council (NECO) over plan to bring about 1,500 of its staff from across the country to its headquarters in Minna, Niger State capital to write promotion examination.

That followed acceptance of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Hon. Akeem Adeyemi, asking the council to consider suspending the plan and allowing the promotion examination to be done at its zonal offices across the country given the security and economic situation of the country.

Adeyemi stated that through a circular dated January 9, the National Examination Council (NECO) scheduled to hold her 2024 staff promotion examination on 14th & 15th February 2024 at the Federal University of Technology, (FUT), Minna, Niger State.

He said in another circular dated January 17, 2024, NECO published the names of about a thousand, five hundred (1,500) staff to partake in the said 2024 Promotion Examination on 14th & 15th February 2024 at the Federal University of Technology, (FUT), Minna, Niger State.

According to the lawmaker, due to the security situation in the country and the economic hardship biting hard on the citizens including the staff of NECO, it is perilous to cause about 1,500 staff to travel from different parts of the country to one place in the name of promotion examination.

He said as an examination body which conducts examinations for candidates all over the country, the organisation can conduct promotion examinations for its staff in different states of the federation.
