Resident doctors at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), Ilorin, Kwara State yesterday staged a peaceful protest over the abduction of their colleague in Kaduna State.
LEADERSHIP Weekend recalls that Dr. Ganiyat Popoola , a staff of National Eye Care Hospital, Kaduna, was abducted alongside her husband and a nephew when bandits raided the staff quarters of the hospital, on December 27, 2023.
The president of the of the Resident Doctors Association at UITH, Dr Yusuf Muhammed said they were loosing their patience, because of the inhumane treatment their abducted member was receiving from captors in the last seven months.
“It is becoming very worrisome, so we continue to engage with the management on both the state and federal level. We also try to meet with security agencies to see what they are doing, but because of the sensitivity of the matter, they could not divulge some information,” he said.
“What we intend to do is to bring this discussion to the limelight, so that well meaning Nigerians will impress it on the government the need to secure her release,” he said.
He said that the national secretariat of NARD has given government two weeks to bring back the abducted member, adding that August 16th marks the end of first week, and that it is expected at the end of the second week, the abducted colleague would be released.”
He warned that failure to secure Dr Ganiyat’s release will force the NARD to call out its members on an industrial action.
Muhammed advised the government at all tiers to beef up security around institutions and the country as a whole.
