A human right group, Young Nigerian Right Organisation (YNRO) has written a petition against some officials of Oshimili South local government area and Delta State government.
The petition addressed to the commissioner of police, Delta State and dated 26th April, 2023, called for investigation into harassment by the officers over such extortions.
Signed by Comrade Victor Ojei, popularly called Wong Box, he said there has been continuous harassment of their client, Dr Basil Nwankwo by some officials who claim they are from the local government council.
“These officials have been trying to stop him from using his car as a mobile shop to sell herbal drugs for his numerous customers. We also engaged with the Chairman Committee on Environment so as to address this incessant and continuous harassment from state actors but all efforts were to no avail, despite we were promised that this issue will be addressed.
“We also had an encounter today 26th of April 2023, they came and closed his mobile shop and threatened him not to open and make sales anymore until he settles them financially.
“We informed them that we are presently in Federal High Court with NAFDAC for the same reasons but they downplayed us. We even called the mobile 07034604993 to reason with him but he started threatening us.
“Despite having all the necessary licenses and permits to operate his business, these officials continue to harass and intimidate our client, causing him great distress and financial loss.
“Their actions have even led to a decline in his business, as many of his customers are now afraid to approach him for fear of being harassed.
“I strongly believe that the actions of these officials are not only unjust but also illegal. As a law-abiding citizen, our client is entitled to carry out his business activities without fear of harassment or intimidation from anyone, especially from those in positions of authority,” he said.
He appealed to the commissioner of police to launch an investigation into the matter and take appropriate action against those responsible for the harassment, trusting that he will ensure that justice is served and that their client can carry out his business activities without fear of further harassment.
