Rita Edochie Blasts Wedding MC Over ‘Double Standard’ Marriage Vows

Veteran Nollywood actress Rita Edochie has condemned a wedding MC over what she described as blatant gender inequality after a video from a wedding ceremony sparked heated debate online.
In the viral clip, the MC asked the bride, identified as Mirabel, to vow never to cheat on her husband, even if he travelled for a long time. He then prayed that she would face severe consequences should she ever be unfaithful.
However, when addressing the groom, Thomas, the MC simply said that if he cheated, “may God forgive him”, a remark that has drawn criticism for appearing to excuse male infidelity.
Reacting on Instagram, Edochie expressed outrage, saying she hoped the video was merely a skit or content created for social media.
“I am very angry this morning, and I pray this is just a joke and content,” she wrote.
The actress questioned why society often excuses men for infidelity while harshly condemning women for the same offence.
“If infidelity is a sin, then it is a sin for both. If forgiveness exists, then it should not be reserved for one gender,” she wrote.
Edochie argued that marriage vows are exchanged equally and should therefore be upheld equally, insisting that accountability, mercy and dignity should never depend on whether the offender is a man or a woman.
Calling the double standard “partiality” and “witchcraft,” she added that a healthy marriage cannot thrive on a system where men are expected to be understood while women are expected to be perfect.
Her comments have since ignited conversations online, with many Nigerians debating whether society still applies different standards to men and women in marriage.
