A community leader in Rivers State, Hon. Innocent Ajaelu, has proposed for the renaming of Oyigbo local government area of the state, to Umuihueze/ Umuokobo /Asa LGA.
Ajaelu, who made the call while speaking with LEADERSHIP in Port Harcourt yesterday, said the call for the change of the name of the LGA is intended to reflect and honour the historical, cultural and identities of indigenous clans that make up the present Oyigbo LGA.
He said: “I wish to humble propose a private bill for the change of name of Oyigbo local government area to Umuihueze/ Umuokobo /Asa LGA.
“The proposed name change is intended to reflect and honour the historical, cultural and identities of our indigenous clans that make up the present Oyigbo LGA.
The Umuihueze, Umuokobo and Asa represent the heritage and the true identity of the people of Oyigbo LGA within and beyond.
“I also believe that this change will promote unity, cultural preservation and proper recognition of the founding communities and the fathers. This change will finally too, put to rest the claims by other tribes to be the rightful owners of Oyigbo LGA.
“It is on record and verifiable fact that Oyigbo is the only LGA in Rivers State that its name does not portray the culture and the values of the people. We have examples of so many LGAs in Rivers State that their name represents their language, the cultural heritage and the values.”
