Rivers State government has called on the residents to prioritise their health and rely on scientifically proven practices to improve their well-being.

The permanent secretary of the state Ministry of Health, Prof. Justina Jombo, made the call yesterday in a broadcast to mark the 2026 World Health Day in Port Harcourt.

Jombo stated that health is a collective responsibility that requires the cooperation of individuals, families, communities, and government.

She noted that this year’s theme; “Together for Health: Stand with Science,” highlights the importance of trusting verified health information and making informed decisions.

The permanent secretary further stated that scientific advancements such as vaccines, effective medications, and public health interventions have continued to save lives globally.

Jombo urged residents to rely on guidance from health professionals and credible institutions such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NDDC), while avoiding misinformation, particularly from unverified social media sources.

She also disclosed that the state government, under the leadership of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has strengthened the healthcare system by employing trained health professionals across public health facilities to better serve residents.

The permanent secretary advised citizens to adopt healthy lifestyles, including regular handwashing, proper hygiene, balanced nutrition, routine vaccination for children, regular exercise, and periodic medical check-ups.

Jumbo warned against harmful habits such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and drug abuse.

She encouraged residents to sleep under insecticide-treated nets to prevent malaria, maintain proper sanitation, and manage stress through adequate rest and social support.

Jombo emphasised that adherence to these simple but effective health guidelines would lead to healthier communities and reduce the spread of diseases.

The permanent secretary commended health workers for their dedication and sacrifice, urging the public to support them in their efforts to build a healthier society.

She reminded citizens that good health is vital not just for individuals, but for families, communities, and the nation as a whole, calling on everyone to stand united in promoting better health outcomes.
