Rivers Peace Deal: ‘Fubara Should Be Wary Of Wike, Storm Always Returns’, Deji Adeyanju Warns

Lawyer and human rights activist, Barr. Deji Adeyanju, has warned that the peace accord midwifed by President Bola Tinubu between the suspended Rivers State governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, may be short-lived, describing it as “a trap, not a truce.”

The latest reconciliation, brokered following months of fierce political tension between both men, which led to a declaration of a State of Emergency in Rivers State, has been celebrated as a breakthrough. But, Adeyanju believed Wike’s political history should give Fubara and even President Tinubu reason to worry.

“Wike has a well-documented history of reneging on promises and betraying political allies,” Adeyanju said in a statement on Friday evening.

“From his vow at the PDP convention to abide by the outcome, which he swiftly disregarded, to his betrayal of Dr. Peter Odili, a man he once called his political father, and his calculated political attacks on President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Wike’s pattern is clear: he honours only his own ambition.”

The Abuja-based lawayer did not mince words in his criticism of the former Rivers State governor, who currently serves as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“Even when he makes a vow, it is as useless as the ‘T’ in buffet; loud in delivery but empty in substance,” he remarked.

Adeyanju also predicted that Wike will eventually betray the agreement facilitated by President Tinubu.

“Governor Fubara must prepare his mind that this reconciliation is a trap, and not a truce,” he warned. “Wike will not only undermine him now but will breach the agreement on purpose. If Wike’s antecedent is anything to go by, he will betray President Tinubu at the right time.”

He further accused Wike of seeing loyalty as “a tool, not a virtue,” adding that anyone who expects the former governor to keep faith “with a successor he now sees as a rival or with his new master is merely postponing disappointment.”

“Fubara should understand that with Wike, the storm always returns,” Adeyanju stated.
