The Rivers State Police Command has paraded four officers attached to a neighbouring state command for allegedly extorting N6.5 million from about three persons along the East-West Road in the state.
This is as its operatives killed two suspected kidnappers cum cultists and arrested one suspected kidnapper within the past one week in parts of the state.
Parading the officers at the police headquarters in Port Harcourt yesterday, the commissioner of police, Nwonyi Polycarp Emeka, said the personnel extorted the sum from three boys after tagging them internet fraudsters.
Nwonyi said: “These policemen are from a neighbouring state command but we arrested them to show that we are here to purge ourselves. I don’t think any other organisation has been more proactive like the police in throwing up the bad eggs from their system. I want to be challenged on that.
“The crime committed by these officers, boils down to corruption and extortion. That is what happened.
“Once again, I want to assure you that we fight crime to a standstill to the best of our ability. I want to welcome members of the public to the Rivers State Zero Crime initiative. It is a must, we must fight crime because a crime against the citizens is a crime against all of us.
“Policemen here are determined for that and I am so sure that the journalists are determined for that. Other stakeholders are also determined for that. Together, we will win the war against crime and criminality in Rivers State.”
