The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kaduna Sector Command, has reported that six individuals died while 11 sustained injuries in a road crash on the Kaduna-Zaria expressway.

Mr. Kabir Nadabo, the Sector Commander, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna that the road traffic crash occurred at Aliko filling station on the Kaduna-Zaria expressway around 06:25 am on Tuesday.

Nadabo attributed the multiple accidents to speeding and reckless driving, leading to a temporary halt in motorists’ movement. He said that the road was now open for passage after the prompt response and rescue conducted by the Zebra 35 Rigachikun rescue team.

“Initial investigations revealed that 23 individuals were involved in the crash, with 11 injured and sadly, resulting in the loss of all 6 lives,” Nadabo stated.

He said that the Toyota bus involved was travelling from Ilesha to Batsari, Katsina State, adding, “The driver was speeding, lost control, and collided with another moving vehicle, causing the crash.”

Nadabo noted that most road traffic accidents on the highway were caused by non-resident motorists, mainly from other states, and attributed them to fatigue.

“As the leading agency in transport management and road safety, the FRSC Kaduna state is deeply saddened by this regrettable yet preventable incident,” Nadabo said.

He stressed the FRSC’s commitment to saving lives, safeguarding properties, and creating awareness on road safety and ethical road conduct.

“Kaduna state holds significant transportation importance; hence, the state Command has instituted safety measures to guide transporters on safe travel, especially during this festive season and beyond. Educating motorists on safety practices significantly reduces Road Traffic Crashes,” he added.

Nadabo urged stakeholders, particularly transport unions, to aid in advocating safety protocols to their drivers.

He also said the Corps’ collaboration with media outlets to educate the public about the perils of dangerous driving, overloading, worn-out tires, and fatigue caused by long journeys.

The sector commander appealed to all road users to adhere to safe driving practices at all times.
