Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has admonished the National Commercial Tricycle and Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association (NACTOMORAS) to ensure that its members are properly captured in a comprehensive database to enhance compliance with safety management on Nigerian highways.
The FRSC corps marshal, Alhaji Shehu Mohammed, said the association must embrace new technological awareness by educating tricycle and motorcycle riders, capturing them in a database and strengthening security measures.
Mohammed spoke at the unveiling and presentation of NACTOMORAS’ 2026 annual calendar, which was chaired by the executive chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PI-CNG), Barr Ismaeel Ahmed.
Represented by the corps commander, Operations Support Service and Special Units, Kumar Tsukwam, the FRSC boss said only qualified and properly registered riders should be allowed to operate in their states in order to safeguard lives and reduce road crashes.
“We cannot afford to continue losing lives daily due to reckless driving on our highways. Safety and strict adherence to traffic rules must be prioritised,” he said.
He stressed the need for adequate safety measures nationwide, adding that some roads remain highly dangerous due to the absence of smart road infrastructure.
“There is a need to regulate the movement of motorcycles in certain parts of the country, especially in areas prone to frequent traffic crashes. In some states, regulations are weak or nonexistent, which is why riders often disregard safety rules due to lack of awareness,” he added.
Citing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as an example, Mohammed explained that tricycle operators are prohibited from operating in certain areas unless they wear approved colour-coded reflective jackets for security and identification purposes.
“This system helps to detect infiltration by unregistered riders. For anyone to operate, they must be registered, certified, and verified. This is how we can build a strong and credible association and ensure a safer transportation system for Nigerians,” he said.
He further highlighted the benefits of the FRSC mobile application, which provides a robust database that verifies vehicle documentation and offers real-time information on bad roads, traffic congestion, and crashes.
Earlier, the national president of NACTOMORAS, Alhaji Muh’d Sani Hassan, said the association is the umbrella body for commercial tricycle and motorcycle owners and riders in Nigeria.
He explained that NACTOMORAS was registered in 1996 and operates through structured branches at the national, state, and local government levels, with millions of members nationwide.
According to him, the association is fully and duly registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and works closely with the Federal Ministry of Transportation, FRSC and the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PI-CNG).
Meanwhile, the Manager, Asset Deployment, PI-CNG, Ahmed Katura, explained that the PI-CNG programme was introduced by the Federal Government to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal and reduce transportation costs for commuters.
Katura acknowledged that every new technology comes with challenges, particularly the availability of CNG, noting that tricycles are being deployed mainly along designated CNG corridors where the fuel is accessible.
“CNG is safe, affordable, and environmentally friendly. Our mandate has also been expanded to include electric tricycles and vehicles. Discussions are already ongoing with the association’s leadership to deploy these innovations across various localities,” he said.
He added that thousands of tricycles have already been deployed, with plans to reach all states before the end of the year.
“This calendar unveiling is just one of many activities. We will continue to make progress, and by God’s grace, we aim to cover the entire country within the shortest possible time,” he said
