The Rotary Club, Lagos, District 9110, with support from the United States (Crutches for Africa), has donated mobility aids, to assist passengers at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) who have mobility challenge. The mobility aids comprise 10 wheelchairs, five crutches, five walking sticks and five walkers.
To better the lives of those with mobility issues,
The Rotary Club, Lagos, District 9110 has donated mobility aid equipment to Benola, a cerebral palsy initiative.
The Rotary Club said the mobility project was made possible through its partner in the United State of America, and the items donated comprised wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, specialty walkers, and orthotics.
Benola was the third organisation to receive the aid equipment from the club after the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, and Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
Speaking at the handing over of the equipment, the president of the Rotary Club of Lagos, Rotarian Joseph Akhigbe said the motive of the club is to help in doing things that will help bring about positive changes in the quality of lives of those that have mobility problems.
On his part, the founder of the Benola Palsy Initiative, Air Vice Marshall Femi Gbadebo, appreciated the generosity of the Rotary Club of Lagos for the donation. He said the number of people who need assistive devices is overwhelming. A lot of people out there are leaving with disabilities, and people with cerebral palsy number about 80,000, so whatever help we can get will go a long way toward making their lives easier.
He said some of these people cannot come out of the house, some cannot move within the house, and this mobility aid is something that helps because as these children get older, their parents also get older, so lifting them or carrying them within the house becomes a big problem.
He said, “But with this equipment, even if it is just to move them with the chair or use a chair to move them from room to room or something, you are saving them a lot of wear and tear.”
