A civil society organisation, StayAlert Humanright Awareness Initiative, has called on President Bola Tinubu to wield the big stick and sack any minister found underperforming in the discharge of their duties.

The group vowed to keep a watchful eye on government functionaries, ready to criticise and recommend the sacking of non-performers.

Addressing a press conference in Abuja, the executive director of the group, Amb. Lary Onah, declared that they would conduct independent assessments of government appointees to ensure transparency, monitor budgets and projects, and safeguard good governance for the benefit of citizens.

“Since existence, Nigeria has never lacked good policies and programs but there has been poor coordination and supervision of budgets and projects,” Onah stated.

He attributed the poor implementation to corruption, personal interests overriding those of citizens, and a lack of assessment, monitoring, and reportage.

The group has commenced monthly assessments of ministers’ performances to make them accountable and proactive. “This monthly program will help citizens evaluate, track, monitor, report and give feedback on ministers’ performances,” Onah said.

While acknowledging that many ministers have performed creditably, the group nominated the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Dr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, as the best performing minister of the month, commending his achievements in human development, infrastructure, and security.

“Before Dr. Wike was named the FCT minister, the city was tagged the most dirty and unsecured city in Nigeria with litany of bad roads, but today, he has not only modified all the school buildings in FCT, but have completed all the abandoned roads projects and made the city the most secured city in Nigeria,” Onah stated.

The group lauded Wike’s efforts in ensuring well-lit streets, completed road projects, and improved security, making Abuja a safe haven.

“Dr. Wike deserves whatever honour bestowed upon him by individuals, groups and establishments,” Onah added.

The CSO welcomed Tinubu’s ongoing assessment of ministers, saying it would keep all appointees on their toes and ensure they deliver on the administration’s mandates.

They, however, urged the President to take decisive action and sack any minister found wanting in their performance.
