The Board of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA), which he is a member, describes Samson Itodo, a Nigerian lawyer as a “community organiser and development practitioner with over a decade experience in elections, parliamentary strengthening, constitution building and youth development.”
He started modestly till he became one of Africa’s leading voices in electoral reform and youth participation in politics.
Itodo’s journey to stardom is rooted in education, dedication and an unyielding belief in democracy.
A visionary leader, Itodo, the executive director of Yiaga Africa, centers his struggles around redefining democracy, electoral integrity and youth inclusion across Africa.
His groundbreaking #NotTooYoungToRun campaign is regarded as shattering barriers, lowering age limits for political offices in Nigeria and inspiring global movements for youth representation.
He has facilitated legislation and policies on constitutional and electoral governance, civic engagement, public accountability and national development.
Itodo has equally provided strategic policy advice to parliamentary committees, electoral commissions, political parties and international donors. Under his leadership, Yiaga Africa has emerged as a leading civic organisation promoting political inclusion, electoral integrity and public accountability in Africa through citizens’ engagement, data, technology and policy advocacy.
He has also initiated numerous democracy and citizens’ engagement projects in Gambia, Ghana, Sierra Leone, and Ethiopia and also invested in building the next generation of leaders with the requisite capacity, character and competence to transform Africa.
It is also credited to him that he has served as a Research Facilitator for the United States Institute for Peace (USIP).
This prominent democracy activist hails from Olamaboro local government area of Kogi State. Itodo’s early years were shaped by a keen awareness of social injustice and governance deficits, which later fuelled his passion for civic advocacy.
His academic journey began with a law degree from the University of Jos (UNIJOS), where he distinguished himself in academics and student leadership and activism. While at the university, he developed a strong interest in constitutional law, human rights and democratic governance—fields that would later define his career.
Itodo pursued further studies at the University of Oxford, where he earned a Master’s degree in Public Policy. His time at Oxford exposed him to global governance frameworks, comparative political systems and policy innovation. It also connected him with a network of reform-minded thinkers, reinforcing his resolve to return to Nigeria and contribute meaningfully to national development.
Before attaining national prominence, Itodo built his career through various roles in civil society and governance-focused organisations. He worked with the National Democratic Institute, where he gained practical experience in election observation, political party development and citizen engagement.
This period was instrumental in sharpening his skills in advocacy, research, and program management.
His defining moment came with his leadership at Yiaga Africa, a non-governmental organisation committed to promoting democracy, governance, and youth participation across Africa. As executive director, Itodo transformed Yiaga Africa into a formidable force in electoral integrity and civic education.
Recognition has followed his work. He has been honoured as a Gates Foundation Goalkeeper and Rising Democracy Leader (NDI). Itodo’s accolades include the Future Africa Award and recognition among 100 Most Influential Young Africans
Today, Itodo is widely regarded as a leading voice in Africa’s democratic space—a man whose rise to stardom was not fuelled by personal ambition alone, but by a commitment to public service. His life serves as an inspiration to a new generation of Africans eager to shape the continent’s future.
