Sanusi Criticising Tinubu’s Economic Reforms Because Of ‘Shift In Loyalty’ – Federal Gov’t

The federal government has responded to remarks made by former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor and Emir of Kano Lamido Sanusi II criticising President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s economic policies.

At an event in Lagos on Wednesday, Sanusi declared he would not assist the current administration, asserting that the country’s economic challenges were predictable and avoidable but refrained from providing insights or solutions.

In a statement yesterday, the minister of information and national orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, accused Sanusi of opposing the reforms due to a “shift in loyalty.” Idris urged Sanusi to set aside personal interests and support policies aimed at national progress.

“It is deeply disappointing that reforms, widely recognised as essential by global experts—including Emir Sanusi himself—are now being subtly condemned because of a shift in loyalty.

“His Highness has a responsibility to contribute constructively rather than undermine reforms due to personal estrangement,” he said.

Idris acknowledged Sanusi’s right to express his views but criticised his approach, saying it undermines public trust.

He called on all leaders to prioritise national unity and support transformative policies to stabilise the economy.

The minister highlighted the progress achieved under Tinubu’s administration, emphasising the unification of exchange rates and the removal of fuel subsidies, which bolstered investor confidence, increased foreign reserves, and freed resources for infrastructure, education, and healthcare.

“These reforms, though challenging, are essential for Nigeria’s long-term stability. Projections from respected institutions, including the World Bank, show positive GDP growth, signalling recovery,” Idris added.

The minister called for stakeholder collaboration to ensure Nigeria’s economic recovery and sustainability and urged leaders to avoid divisive narratives.

“History will record this as a turning point—when leaders and citizens prioritised the nation’s future over personal gain. Together, we will deliver on the promise of a better Nigeria,” he said.
