Jami Schlueter etched his name into Nigerian athletics history breaking the national decathlon record with a commanding total of 7,681 points at the Mt SAC Relays in Walnut, California.
Competing over two days, the 23-year-old surpassed Peter Moreno’s 2017 mark of 7,252 points, delivering a string of personal bests and consistent performances across all ten events to finish seventh overall.
Schlueter built his record-breaking campaign on a strong opening day: 10.78 seconds in the 100m (910 points), a 7.01m long jump (816 points), a 14.30m shot put (747 points), a 2.02m high jump (822 points), and a 49.35s 400m (845 points).
Day two saw him shine brightest in the 110m hurdles, where a personal best of 14.01s earned him 973 points. He followed with a 40.36m discus throw (672 points), a 4.40m pole vault (672 points), a 45.30m javelin throw (519 points), and closed with a 4:45.54 1500m (646 points) for a season’s best total of 7,681.
The significance of the score goes beyond the record books: the same total would have claimed gold at recent African Championships and African Games, underlining Schlueter’s medal potential ahead of next month’s African Championships in Ghana and the Commonwealth Games in July.
Schlueter’s rapid ascent follows his recent switch of allegiance from Great Britain to Nigeria. That decision has already paid dividends—on February 22, 2026, he set a new Nigerian indoor heptathlon record with 5,871 points at the US Combined Events Championships in Indianapolis, moving to second on the African all-time list.
Born to a German father and a Nigerian mother, Schlueter had previously logged a personal best of 7,739 points in the decathlon before switching allegiance, though that mark does not count for Nigeria—similar to Ituah Enahoro’s 8,048 points from 2018, which no longer stands following Enahoro’s switch to represent Germany.
With two national records in quick succession, Schlueter has already begun reshaping Nigeria’s prospects in the combined events.
