The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has paid tribute to its late Senator, Godiya Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District in the 10th Senate.
Akwashiki will be buried tomorrow, Saturday, in Lafiya.
Akwashiki, who died at 52 in an Indian hospital two weeks ago, is remembered for his integrity, selfless service, and principled leadership during a ceremony organised by the SDP National Working Committee (NWC) in Lafia.
The SDP National Chairman, Professor Sadiq Gombe, described Akwashiki as a “shining star” and a rare example of leadership, noting that his death was a profound loss to his family, the party, and the nation.
“Akwashiki lived a life defined by honour, compassion, and the fear of God, earning him respect across political, ethnic, and religious lines,” Gombe said.
Other speakers, including Senator Suleiman Adokwe and Nasarawa State Deputy Governor Dr Emmanuel Akabe, highlighted Akwashiki’s dedication to dialogue, integrity, and grassroots development.
Akwashiki was first elected to the Senate in 2019 and re-elected in 2023, after serving in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly as Majority Leader and Deputy Speaker.
He served in several key capacities at the National Assembly, including as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Inter-Parliamentary Affairs, Vice Chairman of the Committee on Media and Public Affairs, and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Air Force.
We expressed our condolences to Akwashiki’s family and prayed for peace and progress in Nasarawa State and Nigeria.” SDP Party said.
