Security operatives in the Niger Delta have recorded a major breakthrough in the fight against pipeline vandalism following the arrest of a suspected gang leader linked to attacks on oil facilities in Bayelsa State.
Personnel of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) FORMOSO, working with troops from the Nigerian Army’s 5 Battalion in Elele, Rivers State, carried out the operation which led to the arrest of the suspect, identified as Godwin, also known as “Idiot.”
He was arrested on April 25, 2026, at his residence in Egbama-Angalabiri community in Ekeremor Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The operation was based on intelligence reports following increased cases of pipeline vandalism in the Clough Creek area and nearby communities.
The suspect was arrested alongside another man, identified as Happiness, believed to be his accomplice. Security operatives recovered a pump-action rifle and two walkie-talkies during the raid.
Both suspects and the recovered items were later handed over to the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Bayelsa State Command, on April 26 for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The operation is part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to tackle crude oil theft, protect oil installations and improve safety in the region for oil companies and other stakeholders.
Reacting to the development, the Flag Officer Commanding Central Naval Command, Rear Admiral S.D. Ibrahim, commended the Commanding Officer of FOB FORMOSO, Captain S.K. Haruna, for the successful operation.
He urged the team to sustain the momentum in tackling criminal activities in the area.
However, one officer sustained a gunshot injury to the leg during the operation. He has since received medical treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.
