The senator representing Plateau Central and chairman, Senate Committee on Labour, Employment and Productivity,  Diket Plang, has commended President Bola  Tinubu  for renaming the University of Abuja as Yakubu Gowon University.

Plang in  a statement in Jos yesterday described it as a befitting honour to a leader who had continued to contribute immensely to the development of Nigeria in all spheres of life and a strong believer in one Nigeria.

“General Yakubu Gowon is a unifier and nationalist who believes strongly in one Nigeria. The selfless and exemplary leadership he displayed as Head of State is still formidable and a reference point till this day,” he said.

According to him, Gen. Gowon is a great nationalist and a man with great humility.

“The noble role he played during the turbulent moment of Nigeria (1967-1960) is a basis of Nigeria’s existence today and what we are learning as a country. Therefore, renaming of the University of Abuja as Yakubu Gowon University of Abuja is a profound honour.

“The people of Plateau Central Senatorial zone and the entire Plateau State received the renaming with joy and gladness; it is no doubt a deserved recognition for an enduring legacy,” the senator said.
