The Senate has confirmed Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa for a second four-year term as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC).

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South), chairman of the Senate Committee on Power, presented the report during plenary on Tuesday.

He said the committee’s findings confirmed that Yelwa met all the requirements in Section 93 of the Electricity Act, 2023 (as amended).

“The nominee is well qualified and has the relevant experience to be reappointed as Managing Director of the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission,” Abaribe stated.

He added that Yelwa was articulate in his responses during the screening and that security checks revealed no adverse information against him.

According to the report, the committee unanimously agreed that Yelwa possessed the competence, integrity, and experience required for the position.

“The committee, having carefully screened and verified the nominee’s credentials, hereby recommends that the Senate confirm the re-nomination of Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of N-HYPPADEC for a second and final four-year term,” Abaribe said.

Senator Lola Ashiru (Kwara South) described Yelwa as “well known and extremely useful,” commending his performance over the past four years.

“This man is well known to us. He has been there for the past four years, and we find him extremely useful. I appeal to the President of the Senate to adopt this report so that he can settle down and continue his work,” Ashiru said.

Senator Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central) supported Yelwa’s reappointment, saying he had “performed wonderfully and met the expectations of the benefiting states.”

Similarly, Senator Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto South) described Yelwa as a long-time associate and praised his dedication and competence.

“Mallam Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa and I have come a long way since our university days. Once he is given a task, he performs optimally. I believe in his capacity to do very well,” Tambuwal said.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio put the nomination to a voice vote, after which the Senate unanimously confirmed Yelwa for another term as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of N-HYPPADEC.
