The Senate yesterday passed the South West Development Commission Establishment Bill 2024. The bill was passed after it’s third reading.

The  passage followed a report presented by Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan, chairman of the Senate Committee on Special Duties. In his presentation, Senator Kaka outlined that the bill is designed to promote socio-economic development in the South West region.

He said, “If the Commission is established with presidential assent, it will, like other zonal development commissions, receive funding from the federation account, as well as donations from development partners. This funding will be used to address infrastructural deficits and tackle ecological challenges in the region.”

Following the committee’s report, the Senate convened as a committee of the whole to conduct a thorough clause-by-clause review of the bill, culminating in its third reading.
