The senator representing Ebonyi North Senatorial District, Onyekachi Nwebonyi, has distributed 2,000 three-seater desks to 6,000 students.
He also released textbooks, exercise books and branded school bags to pupils and students of public primary and secondary schools in the zone.
Flagging off the exercise at Ohaukwu local government area, Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru lauded the gesture, describing it as a “sustainable project” which aims to address critical infrastructure and learning material gaps for students.
Nwifuru, who was represented by the commissioner for Education, Dr. Donatus Ilang, said the initiative aligned with the government’s goals and helps to meet the basic educational needs of the state.
“What Senator Onyekachi is doing today and has already done are the most sustainable projects in the state. There is no growth without quality education; he has shown that he is truly representing his people,” the governor said.
Senator Nwebonyi reiterated his promise of “unprecedented representation,” adding that the gesture ensures that a conducive learning environment is available to pupils and students in public schools.
He expressed regret that some pupils and students still sit on the floor to take classes, adding that with the provision of desks and textbooks, children of the poor will have access to quality education.
He said that he had also distributed tricycles to students and constructed over 16 kilometres of roads across Ebonyi North within the first three months in office.
