Tennis icon Serena Williams is set for a sensational return to professional tennis after confirming she will compete in the doubles event at Queen’s Club next week, nearly four years after stepping away from the sport.

The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, who last played competitively at the 2022 US Open, has accepted a wildcard entry for the WTA event in south-west London, marking the beginning of an unexpected new chapter in her illustrious career.

Speculation surrounding Williams’ comeback had intensified in recent months after her name appeared on the sport’s anti-doping testing list — a requirement for players seeking a return to professional competition. Although the American initially dismissed suggestions of a comeback during television appearances, anticipation continued to grow within tennis circles.

The confirmation of her return was announced on Monday, with the Lawn Tennis Association unveiling the news alongside an image of Williams accompanied by a crown graphic — a fitting tribute to one of the sport’s most celebrated figures.

According to reports, Williams is expected to partner Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko as the pair target a strong grass-court campaign that could potentially extend to Wimbledon.

Now 44, Williams remains one of the most decorated players in tennis history. During a glittering career, she claimed 73 WTA singles titles and spent 319 weeks as World No. 1, redefining women’s tennis with her dominance, athleticism and longevity.

Speaking about her return, Williams expressed excitement at stepping back onto the grass courts where she enjoyed some of the finest moments of her career.

“Queen’s Club feels like the perfect place to begin this next chapter,” Williams said.

“Grass has given me some of the most meaningful moments of my career, and I’m excited to be back competing on one of the sport’s most iconic stages.”

WTA Tournament Director Laura Robson welcomed the development, hailing Williams as one of the greatest athletes of her generation.

“Serena Williams is one of the greatest athletes the world has ever seen,” Robson said.
