Security operatives in Kigali, Rwanda, have apprehended a suspected serial killer, leading to the unearthing of more than 10 lifeless bodies concealed within a pit meticulously dug in his kitchen.

The incident was initially reported by Rwandan law enforcement agencies and media sources on Wednesday.

The 34-year-old suspect was alleged to have preyed upon both men and women, whom he encountered at local bars, enticing them to his rented residence located on the outskirts of Rwanda’s capital.

According to Thierry Murangira, spokesperson for the Rwandan Bureau of Investigation (RIB), as quoted by local media, “He operated by luring his victims, primarily individuals engaged in sex work, to his home. Once there, he would steal their mobile phones and other personal belongings before committing the heinous act of strangulation, followed by the burial of the victims within the kitchen pit.”

Reports originating from Rwandan media have asserted that more than 10 lifeless bodies were uncovered during the investigation.

An undisclosed source within the RIB, speaking under the cloak of anonymity to AFP, indicated that a tally of 14 victims had been established thus far.

When questioned by AFP, the RIB spokesperson refrained from confirming this specific count, emphasising that “the final number of victims will be determined through comprehensive forensic examinations.”

Meanwhile, it was revealed that the suspect had previously been detained in July on suspicion of rape and robbery.

However, due to insufficient evidence, he was subsequently released on bail, a development that has raised concerns and scrutiny regarding the handling of such cases within the criminal justice system.

An ongoing investigation transpired, leading in a search of the suspect’s residence, led to the grisly discovery of the concealed remains within the kitchen pit.

The alleged serial killer confessed to acquiring knowledge in the art of murder by studying videos featuring notorious serial killers, therefore, he resorted to the horrific act of dissolving some of his victims in acid, underscoring the gruesome nature of his crimes.

It was revealed that the suspect meticulously selected his victims, conducting extensive research on each individual before enticing them to his abode.

He seemed to prefer those who were less likely to have close-knit family or friends who might become concerned about their abrupt disappearance, adding a sinister layer to the ongoing investigation.

There is now a pressing call for a thorough and transparent legal process to ensure that justice is served for the victims and their grieving families.
