The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Comrade Philip Shaibu, has reiterated the urgent need for the full establishment of the National Sports Commission (NSC) Board, describing it as a critical step towards deepening reforms and strengthening the administration of sports in Nigeria.
Shaibu made the call in a press statement signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Ben Ogbemudia, in which he emphasised that a fully constituted NSC Board would enhance policy coordination, strategic planning and institutional collaboration required to accelerate sports development across the country.
According to the NIS boss, the ongoing reforms within Nigeria’s sports sector are already laying the foundation for long-term growth and sustainable development, but the formal constitution of the NSC Board would provide the needed administrative structure to consolidate the gains.
He expressed confidence that recent reforms and infrastructure investments in the sports sector would usher in a new era for Nigerian sports, creating sustainable opportunities for young athletes and unlocking the nation’s vast sporting potential.
Shaibu noted that the leadership framework of the National Sports Commission is already taking shape, with Alhaji Shehu Dikko serving as Chairman of the Commission, while Hon. Bukola Olopade remains the Director-General and Secretary of the Board.
The former Edo State Deputy Governor maintained that completing the board structure would significantly improve institutional synergy among stakeholders and ensure more effective implementation of sports policies and programmes.
“With the constitution of the NSC Board by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, it will complete the circle of administrative reform the President is carrying out in the sports ecosystem in the country,” Shaibu stated.
The NIS boss stressed that sports remain a powerful tool for youth empowerment, national unity and economic growth, adding that Nigeria stands to benefit immensely from a coordinated and properly governed sports system.
