Shakira has spoken about the heartbreak she experienced after her widely reported split from former footballer Gerard Piqué in 2022.

In a recent interview, the singer reflected on life after the breakup. She described the period as one of the toughest chapters of her life.

In the interview, she said:

“I always thought that I was more fragile or weaker than what life proved me to be.”

The end of Shakira’s 11-year relationship inspired her hit song, Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53, released a year after the split.

The track referenced the alleged infidelity of former footballer Gerard Piqué. It also became Shakira’s first Top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in more than a decade.

“It was just pure catharsis. I really needed to write about what I was going through and not have any censor,” Shakira added.

The singer described songwriting as a form of therapy, saying it was “like going to a shrink, only cheaper”. She also revealed that she relied on family and close friends to help her through the difficult period.

Shakira, who shares sons Milan (13) and Sasha(11) with Piqué, said life’s challenges come with lessons. Following the separation, she focused on moving forward and raising her children.

“Life is a bitch, but it’s so worth living because friends are there for you,” she said about going through heartbreak.

Shakira added that you have to have gratitude for the life lessons.

She stated:

“Even for the people that leave you with scars, because they just make us better.”

She elaborated on motherhood by saying, “When your world collapses, you have to get up and pay the bills and still prepare breakfast and take your kids to school. Life needs to go on.”

“The moment I became a mother, I saw life through a different perspective, and my kids are not only the best thing that happened to me, but I’ve learned so much from them every day.”

Although Shakira was previously linked to Jimmy Butler and Lewis Hamilton, she appears content with the two boys who currently play the biggest role in her life.

Talking about future relationships, Shakira stated, “I’m just thinking of raising my kids. I don’t see that for now, maybe when the boys are older.”

She has since relocated from Spain to Miami with her sons.
