A former federal lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has criticised the Federal Government over reports that only N36 million was released for the health sector in the 2025 fiscal year, calling the development “unfortunate” and a sign of government unseriousness.

Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th Senate, expressed his concerns on Friday through his verified X account.

He warned that if the reports were confirmed, the paltry allocation would reflect a lack of commitment to addressing the nation’s pressing healthcare needs.

“The finance minister needs to fully respond to this,” Sani wrote, urging the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, to provide a detailed explanation.

He added, “If it’s confirmed that only N36 million was released for the health sector in 2025, then it’s unfortunate and a demonstration of lack of seriousness in the health sector.”

Sani’s remarks come amid growing concerns over funding gaps in Nigeria’s healthcare system, which many experts said undermine efforts to improve public health services.

The former lawmaker’s call highlighted the need for transparency and accountability in the management of federal allocations, particularly in critical sectors like health.

While the Ministry of Finance has yet to issue a formal statement, public attention was increasingly focused on how the government plans to meet the country’s healthcare demands.
